As much as I enjoy sticking it to “da man”, the battle ain’t over yet and the final figures of how much Sony (and everyone else) has made is slightly premature.

Once we factor in total sales for the period and not just the 1 week (remember people are still buying the singles. Current Monday sales has 1 Joe McElderry (80k)
2 Rage Against The Machine (40k)) and include albums/dvds/merchandise etc for Rage, everyone’s Christmas will be very happy… including Sony!

Kudos sir for the figures!

Thanks for that – I was trying to do the maths, as I was pretty fed up of a bunch of associates of mine thinking that the ‘Sony makes a killing – they’re the real winners’ argument made them big, clever and above it all, but I didn’t have the revenue percentages.

At the end of the day, it was fun, Shelter got a pile of cash for Christmas, Joe McWotsit got more exposure than he otherwise would have, we all got the satisfaction of moshing to RATM on Radio 1. Technically, the only losers that I can see were the bookies, who lost an estimated £1 million, but that’s their own silly fault for not doing the maths in advance and making a poor judgement call – in business, them’s the breaks.

I call this a win/win/win situation, and a merry christmas to all of you!
